Are you wondering what to serve as an appetiser for your next dinner reunion? This salad is the perfect crowd pleaser. Using Spanish Serrano Ham & melon as the star, accompanied by mozzarella pearls and balsamic drizzle will sure impress all of your guests! Lets make it!
This salad will transport you to Spain, by the first bite. The typical Spanish dish of “Jamon con Melon” is made out of melon wedges wrapped in local Serrano Ham. Today, we will take a twist to this traditional recipe and adding other Mediterranean ingredients to turn this dish into an upgraded salad.
Recommendations when making the Spanish Serrano Ham & Melon Salad:
- Fresh melon is always best. Making this salad when melon or cantaloupe is in season, makes it even better.
- Using a melon baller tool will make your salad more aesthetically pleasing. However, it is not necessary. If you don’t have one, do not stress too much.
- Mozzarella pearls might be hard to find. You could also use fresh mozzarella and cut it into small, bite-sized pieces.
- I recommend using a bed of rugula (over any other type of salad). It pairs best with the ingredients we are using.
- If you can’t find balsamic glaze, then make it yourself.
How to make a balsamic glaze:
For this recipe, a store-bought balsamic glaze was used, as it is less time consuming and practical. If you can’t find it, you can make the glaze yourself.
In a pot, in medium heat, add 1-2 cups of balsamic vinegar of choice. Add 3 tablespoons of sugar (of your choice). Let reduce, stirring constantly until vinegar has caramelised and has a thicker consistency. Let cool and use.
