This easy homemade bagel recipe is my sister’s! She’s an amazing cook, and we love sharing recipes with each other. We made these bagels together over the weekend and enjoyed them fresh out of the oven with Philadelphia cream cheese and gravlax…such a delicious combo!
Making bagels at home might sound intimidating, but this easy homemade bagel recipe is simple and totally worth it. The result? Chewy, golden-brown bagels with a perfect texture…just like the ones from a bakery. Plus, you can customize them with your favorite toppings!
Ingredients:
- 500g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (7g) instant dry yeast
- 300ml (1 ¼ cups) warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- A pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon honey (for boiling water)
- Egg wash (1 beaten egg or milk)
- Toppings of choice: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, shredded cheese, or everything bagel seasoning
How to Make Bagels at Home
1️⃣ Make the Dough
In a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and warm water. Mix for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl.
2️⃣ Let It Rise
Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rise for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
3️⃣ Shape the Bagels
Place the dough onto a floured surface or silicone mat and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, poke a hole in the center, and stretch it slightly into a bagel shape.
4️⃣ Boil the Bagels
Preheat the oven to 230°C (450°F). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of honey (this gives the bagels a nice chew and subtle sweetness). Boil each bagel for 30 seconds per side, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking tray.
5️⃣ Add Toppings & Bake
Brush the bagels with egg wash or milk, then sprinkle with your favorite toppings. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
How to Store & Reheat Bagels
If you’re not eating them all at once (hard to resist!), slice them in half and freeze them. When you’re ready to eat, just pop them in the toaster or air fryer at 200°C (400°F) for 4-5 minutes, and they’ll taste as fresh as the day you baked them!
This easy homemade bagel recipe is perfect for a weekend baking project. They taste amazing with cream cheese, smoked salmon, or even just butter and jam. Give it a try, and let me know what toppings you love!
