What is so great about baked oats?
- Convenience: This recipe is so simple and easy to make, and chances are high that you have all the ingredients already in your kitchen.
- Nutrition: This baked oats recipe is high in fibre, healthy carbohydrates, fruits (depending on the variation), protein and superfoods.
- Taste: it feels like you are eating warm cake for breakfast, but healthy!
Steps to make baked oats (blank canvas recipe)
In order to make flavoured baked oats, you need a basic recipe; this is what I call a blank canvas recipe.
The blank canvas baked oatmeal consists of 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 cup of instant oatmeal, 2 eggs, 2 cups of milk (your choice, I usually use soy), 1 tsp baking powder, sweetener of choice. The perfect sweeter for this recipe is maple syrup, although you can use other types of sweeteners such as stevia, coconut sugar, monk fruit, etc.
Step 1: Mix your dry ingredients.
I love adding chia seeds for extra fibre and omega 3! Adding flavourings such as spices or vanilla extracts makes this recipe even more delicious, I highly recommend it.
Step 2: Mix your wet ingredients in a separate bowl and then add it to the dry ingredients.
Mixing dry ingredients first and adding already mixed wet ingredients will ensure that there are no clumps in your batter. You could skip this step and just mix it all together if you are in a rush, but if you have the extra time, go the extra mile for optimal results.
Step 3: Add your toppings of choice (blueberries are a classic for this recipe!) and bake on a pre-heated oven for approximately 35-40 mins.
After adding all your favourite toppings, bake the oats in an oven pan lined with parchment paper. I usually add coconut sugar on top to make the top layer extra crunchy. Make sure that your oven is pre-heated to 180 degrees and to not over-bake.
Apple Pie Baked Oats (With Pumpkin!)
These Apple pie baked oatmeal is a delicious and warm on-the-go breakfast, perfect for the autumn/fall months. To the basic recipe, add 2 apples that have been peeled and cut into small squared. Add 1/2 cup apple sauce or pumpkin puree and 1 tbs pumpkin spice. So easy!
