Fall is coming soon. This means two things, pumpkin spice lattes and apple + cinnamon desserts. Today, you should make an apple + cinnamon dessert. If you have a few apples sitting around in your kitchen, then you need to make this Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Healthy Vegan Apple Crumble. This healthy vegan apple crumble is quick, very easy to make, and you probably already have the ingredients in your pantry. Keep reading if you want to learn how to make a healthy but delicious apple crumble.
A few things you need to know if you are interested in the nutrition of this Healthy Vegan Apple Crumble:
- Most desserts are full of sugar, this one isn’t, and you wouldn’t even tell if you weren’t the one who made it.
- The only source of fat used in this apple crumble is coconut oil. Coconut oil is a healthy saturated fat and has amazing health benefits such as boosting heart health and makes your skin, hair and teeth beautiful.
- This dessert is gluten free.
- Apples are the main ingredient in this dessert. Apples are full of fiber, vitamins and minerals.
Follow these RECOMMENDATIONS for better results:
- If you want the apple crumble to be sweeter, then you should add more maple syrup or make sure you are using red apples instead of green as green apples tend to be more tart/sour and red have a more rich and sweet taste.
- If you want the dessert to be completely sugar free, then swap the maple syrup for stevia or sucralose. Stevia and sucralose are also cero calories, which decreases the total calorie content of the apple crumble so if you are counting calories or following iifym, stevia or sucralose is the way to go.
- If you are out of maple syrup, you can substitute for honey. However, honey is not vegan and will therefore make your apple crumble non-vegan.
- If you are like me, and you love the crumble part of this dessert, then increase the streusel quantities. You can do a 2:1 crumble to apple ratio or go wild and triple the quantities. If you triple the quantities, then you need an honorable mention at lifestylemartina!
- This dessert is AMAZING if you serve it warm. Before serving make sure to microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute as the apples become gooey and the crumble chewy and soft, so delicious.
- The last recommendation is to top the apple crumble with a scoop of healthy ice cream. I will share a few healthy ice creams (Vegan options too that you should try. However, for this apple crumble, vanilla or cinnamon ice cream works best.
Healthy Ice Cream options you need to try:
Best non-vegan:
- OPPO: My favorite is the OPPO ice cream. I love their vanilla and salted caramel flavors. This ice cream is not vegan as it has dairy, but their flavor is delicious and the whole tub has around 300 calories. Not bad for an entire tub of ice cream. This one is also lower in sugar and high in protein.
- Halo Top: If you can’t find OPPO at your local supermarket, try looking for Halo Top. Chances are, you will find it. Halo Top has flavors such as birthday cake, chocolate peanut butter and red velvet. The nutrition of Halo top is similar to that of OPPO.
Best vegan Ice Cream:
- Ben & Jerry’s: Sadly, not very healthy but it’s a good option for vegans. Their flavor of coconut and caramel is delicious, but it has a lot of sugar. I haven’t been able to find a low-sugar vegan option for ice-cream unfortunately.
- Alpro: The Alpro brand has a Madagascar vanilla ice cream flavor which is heavenly. However, it is important to consider that the ice cream is made from soy milk.
If you can’t find any of the ice cream brand mentioned above, or one that might be healthier than normal ice creams, then you can either use a normal ice-cream, swap the ice-cream for cold yogurt or blend frozen bananas in a high speed blender to make NICE CREAM.
A little sentimental value:
This apple crumble is very special because it reminds me of my childhood and my Dutch heritage. When I met my Dutch family for the first time, I was very young and I fondly remember sitting in a cozy café in Leiden, The Netherlands called “Bruine Boon” and eating warm apple tart. This is when my obsession with apple desserts started, and the obsession goes on steroids once the weather starts getting colder in the fall.
